Staff Design Engineer

Nuvation, a successful Engineering Electronic Design Services company, with offices in Waterloo and San Jose, is expanding our Waterloo office. Nuvation provides project-based chip, board, and software design services for the embedded systems industry. A full spectrum of Systems Engineering, including FPGA design, Board (PCB) design, Signal Integrity analysis, Firmware for MCU, DSP and NPUs, and turnkey Product Development services are provided to clients in the medical, telco, defense/aerospace, video security, semi-conductor and broadcast video sectors, to name just a few.

Talented, innovative Staff Design Engineers, with 2-3 years professional experience, are immediately required for full time positions. Hands-on experience in one or more technical disciplines such as Embedded Software/Firmware Design, Programmable Logic (FPGA) Design and/or Hardware (Digital and Analog Board-level) design is required. Three general areas of participation:
Engineering Execution – Actively contributing to the delivery of our Engineering Services. All levels of technical activity will be involved, varying depending on your experience, the project and team resources.

Technical Development – Developing your technical skills, knowledge and leadership through a work environment that provides mentoring and open collaboration.

Customer Interaction – Ensuring project success by working directly with team members to provide timely and accurate project updates to clients. Providing pre-sales and post-sales technical resources to support our Sales Account Managers.

Must-Haves:

  • Technical expertise working as a Staff Engineer in advanced design through co-op placement or recent employment
  • A willingness to collaborate with team members
  • Ability to thrive in a work environment that requires constant learning based on a solid understanding of engineering technologies
  • High-level design, detailed design, and implementation/verification in one of more of the following:
    • embedded systems firmware/software, ranging from 8-bit microcontroller-based designs to multi-core 32+ bit SoC implementations in a variety of industry applications, or
    • programmable logic systems, ranging in speeds, size, and complexity - from straight-forward systems to complex designs using the largest FPGAs on the market in a variety of industry applications, or
    • analog and digital board designs, ranging from 4 to 34 layers
  • Experience working with programmable logic/board designers on system bring-up
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple concurrent tasks/projects
  • Strong verbal communication
  • Ability to review and write technical documentation
  • Ability to build strong client relationships working directly in pre- or post-sales technical environments where advanced technical skill and knowledge is required
  • University degree or College Diploma in Electrical/Electronics, Mechatronics or Computer Science – hardware design

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Experience working with video and imaging applications
  • Design experience in a secondary discipline
