Nuvation Hikes for a Cure

Nuvation team supports charity hike for Histiocytosis Association

San Jose, Calif, September 22, 2002 — In support of finding a cure for the rare disease of Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH), many Nuvation team members joined forces today with 60 hikers to climb Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, California. The participants of the hike raised over $24,000 for research funding for the Histiocytosis Association of America.

Histiocytosis is a rare blood disease that is caused by an excess of white blood cells called histiocytes. The histiocytes cluster together and can attack the skin, bones, lung, liver, spleen, gums, ears, eyes, and/or the central nervous system. The disease can range from limited involvement that spontaneously regresses to progressive multi-organ involvement that can be chronic and debilitating. In some cases, the disease can be life threatening.

The vast majority of people diagnosed with histiocytosis are children under the age of 10, but it is also found in adults of all ages. It is approximated that histiocytosis affects 1 in 200,000 children born each year in the United States. This illness is so rare, there is little research into its cause and treatment, and it is often referred to as an "orphan disease," meaning it strikes too few people to generate government-supported research.

In order to raise awareness and funding for this disease, Colleen and Ron McPeek-Bechtold, parents of Anton, who was born with Langerhands Cell Histiocytosis, organized the Hike-for-a-Cure. "It is a grueling 18-mile round trip hike, with over a mile uphill, all done in a single day. It represents some of the physical and political challenges Anton and his family has had to fight," stated Michael Worry, CEO of Nuvation.

This year marks the second annual fundraising hike. "Hike-for-a-Cure rapidly took root in 2001, with 27 hikers making the climb that September, raising over $12,000. We are very happy to say that the growth has continued strong in 2002. This year 60 hikers made the climb, and as of today, have raised over $24,000!" stated Colleen McPeek-Bechtold, visionary of Hike-for-a-Cure.

The next hike to the top of Half Dome is scheduled for Sunday September 21, 2003.
