Nuvation Device Spotlight This issue’s device spotlight is TI’s DaVinci. DaVinci technology is a DSP-based solution tailored for digital video applications that provide video equipment manufacturers with integrated processors, software and tools. DaVinci enables original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to more easily and quickly develop a range of innovative, cost efficient digital video products, transforming the way consumers experience digital video.

The technology is targeted toward video security, IP set-top box, videoconferencing, automotive infotainment, portable media and digital cameras.

DaVinci processors are built on TI’s top DSP TMS320C6000™ platform, leveraging TI's newest C64x+™ DSP core. The DaVinci processors consist of scalable, programmable DSP-based systems-on-chips (SoCs) tailored from DSP and ARM cores, accelerators and peripherals that are optimized to match price, performance and feature requirements for a broad spectrum of digital video end equipments.

DaVinci supports several video codecs ranging from encode and decode of JPEG, MPEG-2 and -4 to H.264 and Microsoft’s Windows Media Video 9

DaVinci is a standalone platform that will allow OEMs to pick and choose the most efficient solutions in video. This is one advantage over proprietary video core vendors like ST, Broadcom, and Conexant. A customer does not have to rely on the silicon vendor to modify the video software for a new application.
