Affordable Housing in the Bay Area?! Nuvation helps build a home.
Habitat for Humanity is an organization that enlists volunteers from around the globe to help build affordable housing for low and middle-income families. Many people are surprised to learn that Habitat for Humanity is not only supporting international housing projects, they are also active in most communities across the nation as well. According to their website, Habitat has built more than 50,000 houses with families throughout the United States and another 100,000-plus houses in communities around the world. Now at work in 92 countries, Habitat is building a house every 26 minutes. By 2005, Habitat houses will be sheltering 1 million people.
|
Families must apply to Habitat to be eligible for this housing, and if accepted, they must put in a certain amount of "sweat equity" or work on their own house. After that requirement is met, the family can purchase the house at a large discount.

If you're like us and enjoy building stuff and helping people, you can probably find a Habitat project close to home. For those in the San Francisco Bay Area, there are four chapters including Habitat SF, Silicon Valley HFH, East Bay HFH, and Peninsula HFH.
Most of the labor is done by volunteers from newbies to construction professionals who offer services (such as welding, plumbing, landscaping) free of charge. Tools are donated or provided by the HFH organization so you only have to bring yourself. A core group of "Americorp" volunteers work 5-6 days a week at many HFH sites. Many of these volunteers are recent college grads, interning with Americorp, in which the government sponsors housing and food in exchange for a year of volunteer work anywhere in the US. The interns are often young, energetic, and efficient in utilizing the help of volunteers who show up on any given day.

It seems any opportunity to break out power tools and hammers will attract Nuvation people. Recently a dozen Nuvation employees volunteered on a Habitat for Humanity project in Redwood City, California. From painting walls and landscaping, to digging holes and spackling, the Nuvation crew volunteered their time and energy for a great cause - affordable housing for families. Aside from the cause, volunteering for HFH is a great way to learn new skills, be outdoors, and a great work out all in one. It's also a refreshing contrast to our high-tech, behind-the-monitor routines.
