As I sit down to type this letter for our first 2005 issue of CURRENT, my first thoughts are to thank you for taking the time to read our little newsletter, which has now attracted several thousand subscribers.  Also many thanks to all of our clients, partners, and employees for such an excellent past year.

Some of the more interesting projects we had the honor of designing included a low-jitter clock generator running over 100MHz with less than 9 femtoseconds of peak-to-peak jitter.  We had another big design with one of our defense clients, this one with circuit speeds to 10GHz in a very dense, 26-layer PCB.   That one of our consumer product clients went on to win the 2005 CES Innovation Award was a huge milestone, one that will be remembered always, along with the long nights for weeks before.  Another of our clients has been developing a revolutionary storage technology, and in addition to the firmware and hardware support we’ve been able to lend, we have the honor of having our ATA IP cores implemented as part of the FPGA architecture.  One of our semiconductor clients just began their 10th project with us, entrusting us with the architecture design for a cornerstone product.  Our teams were very proud to have been chosen by a Fortune 50 client for a mission-critical project and are looking forward to many future projects together.  There are numerous more projects I’d love to mention, but unfortunately the editor didn't go for mentioning the next 50 or so design successes. :)

This issue of CURRENT features part-three of Ben’s Signal Integrity corner discussing high-speed trace design principles.  As more and more companies venture into high-speed, high-density “digital” designs, Ben’s insights from a microwave/RF/signal integrity perspective have found a growing audience.   Jason’s Wireless USB cover story introduces another emerging standard in the wireless space.   This article is regretfully a bit of a swan’s song for our Mr. Rothe; we’ll miss his talent and cheer but wish him well with his promising photography career.   He does have an amazing eye for everything analog.  Lastly, we couldn’t help but notice all the recent growth in PR around Electronic Design Services (EDS) from the major media centers.  We’ve certainly felt a strong surge in business over the past few years so it’s nice to see the buzz.  We look forward to continued growth as one of the premier design services company in North America and hope to count you among our long-term clients.

In closing, I’d like to remind everyone that we have our 5th annual Hike-for-a-Cure coming up the weekend of September 24th.  We do this hike to raise funds and awareness for Histiocytosis, a rare blood disease with which unfortunately my nephew was born.  We hope you’ll save the date and join us in Yosemite to hike Half Dome for this important cause.

Best wishes for a successful 2005!
