Spring is here and business is in full bloom. Kicking off the year with the strongest start in company history, Nuvation is engaged in a plethora of cutting-edge projects and technologies, growing on both the American and Canadian fronts. Thank you for taking the time to read this issue of CURRENT, and many thanks to all of our clients, partners, and employees for an excellent past quarter.
Nuvation is on the forefront of streaming video over IP technology with our IP Camera Reference Design, now based on TI’s DaVinci™ technology TMS320DM6446 digital media processor and TI’s digital media software. This little camera has been generating an amazing response. Nuvation recently demonstrated the IP Camera at ISC West (the leading security and surveillance conference), TI Developer’s Conference, and the Embedded System Conference.
Some of the more interesting projects we have had the honor of designing include an FPGA platform for high performance computing acceleration, a 10G telecom blade for deep packet inspection, a device for 3D facial recognition, audio and video subsystems for digital cinemas, and a medical ultrasound product.
This issue of CURRENT leads with an exciting technology that Nuvation has had the opportunity to work on: EtherCAT. Nuvation is one of a handful of companies in North America to have developed an EtherCAT slave, and certainly one of the first design services companies here to implement the technology.
Next, we have a partner contributed article from Microchip discussing an integrated wireless networking solution comprising of three new components ideal for RF applications requiring low power and excellent RF performance.
Our device spotlight shines its light on Qpixel’s QL201B, an H.264 low-power main profile A/V codec for digital consumer electronics. The spotlight also outlines Qpixel’s video compression technology and flexible architecture. Finally, we have included a full product update on the new DaVinci™ IP Camera Reference Design, a licensable design to accelerate your video product development.
To meet our growth plans, Nuvation is looking for seasoned talent and gifted staff engineers to join our world-class design teams in San Jose and Waterloo. With an opportunity to work on leading-edge products across a range of applications, from consumer electronics to communications, our people are always developing new skills. Our environment here at Nuvation is dynamic & fast-paced, but we have a lot of fun along the way (experience with nerf guns, BattleBots and balcony BBQ's not required, on the job training will be available). If you know great engineers who may be looking for a new home, point them to our careers page for a list of opportunities currently available.
In other exciting news, this year, Nuvation turns 10! We’ll be celebrating with a very special Cinco de Mayo party, complete with aforementioned BBQ, Battlebots and Bubbly! Please contact us if you did not already receive an Evite invitation (we’re hearing some isolated issues with spam filters, etc). We’d love to have all of our valued customers and partners join us in this celebration on May 10th in San Jose:

Another date to note is Sunday September 30th, which is when we will be hiking Half Dome in Yosemite for our annual Hike For A Cure. This will be our 7th hike, and we intend to surpass the $100k we raised last year for Histiocytosis. A rare blood cell disease, my nephew was diagnosed with Histiocytosis at three months old. Hike For A Cure is open to all, a great hike and a challenge for a great cause. You may register in advance online.
On a personal note, I’d like to welcome my new daughter Morgan into the world, born March 21st. A beautiful and curious little girl, she was born at a strong 9 pounds, 5 ounces in a natural childbirth. My wonderful wife is doing great. Juggling our newborn with our explorer two year old has given us the opportunity to take our family project management to a new level.
All the best,
Michael Worry
