Device Spotlight:
The Motorola HCS08 Micro

Nuvation Device SpotlightThe Motorola HCS08 is this issue's Device Spotlight. Even though it hits the scales in a 44 pin TQFP package, it is a serious heavyweight contender in feature set. The HCS08 family is an extension of Motorola's highly successful HC08 family. It isn't hungry for volts (1.8V), but it performs with the best (20 MIPS). It's so light on your power budget that one of its power management modes supports down to 20 nA.
This part was chosen as the MCU for one of our embedded system design projects last year. All of the project design requirements were met, and within the BOM cost budget. For a MCU priced under $5, one gets: 32k flash, 2k RAM, ADC, various timers, interrupts, and GPIO. Nuvation used the part to interface to a CPLD via a proprietary parallel interface. It also communicated with a PC via I²C bus. The newly released MCU from Motorola proved to be easy to program and debug as well. Nuvation recommends considering this part for low-power, 8-bit applications.
