Nuvation Battery Management System Completes MESA Conformance

“Nuvation’s attainment of Draft 3 conformance streamlines the integration of their battery management system with Parker’s MESA-compliant inverters and 3rd-party site controllers on the Alevo GridBank project. As a founding member of MESA, Parker views Nuvation’s adoption of MESA standards and their ongoing involvement as an important step in simplifying the integration of Nuvation BMS into energy storage systems.”   – Daniel Friberg, Division Engineering Manager, Parker Hannifin

Sunnyvale, California. June 6, 2016. Nuvation Energy has announced that their battery management system for large-scale energy storage systems (ESS) is now conformant with the MESA-Device/SunSpec Energy Storage Model. “MESA Draft 3 conformant products share a common communications interface that exposes all the data and control points required for operating the energy storage system,” said John Corman, Vice-President, Engineering and Product Management at Nuvation. “Nuvation BMS can now be integrated with any other MESA-conformant energy storage hardware or software without the custom middleware often required to enable different companies’ products to work together.”

“Nuvation’s attainment of the latest conformance streamlines the integration of their battery management system with Parker’s MESA-conformant inverters and 3rd-party site controllers on the Alevo GridBank project,” said Daniel Friberg, Division Engineering Manager, Parker Hannifin. “As a founding member of MESA, Parker views Nuvation’s adoption of MESA standards and their ongoing involvement as an important step in simplifying the integration of Nuvation BMS into energy storage systems.”

The MESA (Modular Energy Storage Architecture) Alliance is a California-based non-profit organization that was created to develop shared open standards and communication protocols for energy storage systems. Its work includes close collaboration with related groups including the SunSpec Alliance and the Electric Power Research Institute. MESA members include many of the energy storage industry’s leading utilities, ESS developers, battery manufacturers, energy management companies, and power conversion system (PCS) manufacturers. The goals of this industry-driven effort towards standardization include giving electrical utilities more choice by enabling multi-vendor, component-based energy storage systems.

“Nuvation’s MESA-conformant BMS can be integrated with 1Energy’s Intelligent Controller product with minimal effort and expense, which makes it an excellent battery management solution for energy storage systems that are being managed by our software,” said Andrew Miller, VP of Engineering, 1Energy Systems. “Nuvation’s contributions to MESA over the past year have accelerated the energy storage industry’s progress towards open standards for ESS design and ensured that battery management systems are well covered by the standard.”

Nuvation Energy joined MESA in February, 2015 and is currently collaborating with other MESA members to develop the Draft 4 specification. Draft 4 will include new battery models that expose significant additional measurement and performance data for lithium-ion batteries. In addition, it will include definitions for commonly used terms such as “State of Health” and “State of Charge,” which can often be a source of confusion within the energy storage industry.
